What's new at the Sanghalei shop .....
Tim Morch and his nephew,
Matt Morch, came to test out
our first two completed
Guillemot singles.
From Last Year:
We have been working on the first
Guillemot singles for some time, and
finally were able to iron out the details for
the combing, rudder, hatches, and foot
rest/rudder controls.
Tim and Matt spent several enjoyable
days testing them out on the Khao
Laem lake and adjoinging streams.
Testing and modifications complete,
we loaded the two kayaks and headed
for Ranong and the island of Paa
Yam, where Tim spends the Canadian
winter months.
Tim Morch is a freelance writer and photographer and combines his
artistic skills with his travelling and sports adventures.  He has an
interesting website called Words & Images at <www.timmorch.com>
and also at <http://timmorch blogspot.com> and
<http://www.flickr.com/photos/timmorch>
Tim and Matt are from Ottawa,
Canada, are kayak enthusiasts,
and spend the winter months
travelling, mostly in Thailand
and other parts of Asia
And Brent is very proud of them !!
Tim and Matt are so enthusiastic about Sanghalei's canoes and kayaks that
they have teamed up with me (Brent) to start a distributorship in Canada.
We have already shipped our first canoe and kayak.  If anyone in Canada is
interested in seeing our boats, or purchasing, please contact Tim via his
website or myself, Brent, via <brentbateman@hotmail.com>

Tim's first shipment to Canada:  an Apaloosa
canoe for Carla and a Guillemot single kayak
for Mary . . . built, crated, and shipped !!
David Knapp and his wife, Pan, operate a very
nice restaurant on the island of Si Chang, and,
with his two sons, is also an avid paddler . . . He
would like to use Sanghalei's canoes to organize
paddling excursions for tourists down some of the
many wonderful rivers in Thailand.
So the shop is
presently busy putting
together a double
kayak and three
Apaloosa canoes.
And David will
need a trailer
for transport, of
course . . .

We can build
trailers too !!
Which reminds me . . . we
can also build a house or
two, if the need arises !!

An NGO friend asked for
help to build a house for a
Mon family . . . Brent used
to build metal frame homes
in Honolulu a few years
back . . . so we took some
time off and built a house on
the Mon side of the lake !!
And then along happened a dude named Marco Reinard . . . !!!

Marco is a well-known environmental activist who has been creating
awareness through his feats as a marathon paddler and sailer.
Originally from Luxembourg, he is now based out of Phuket Island.  We
have sold Marco 3 Apaloosa canoes for his tourist paddling operation
and he has helped us to test our new design . . . we particularly hope to
be able to work with him to build a craft for his proposed adventure to
paddle/sail a 3-man outrigger sailing canoe from Thailand to Japan, via
such places as Cambodia, Bornea, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan,
and anything in-between . . . and perhaps beyond !!
Brent lofted a new design,
we cut a set of frames and
built the prototype, and
then delivered it to Marco in
Phuket.  We are now
waiting for Marco to give us
his studied assessment.

Then we will take it from
     there !!??
We will of course keep this website up-to-date on Marco's adventures
and achievements . . . and the internet is also tracking him . . . feel
free to look him up ... Marco Reinard on Google or Yahoo will do
And to end the page . . . we now
have a new apprentice !!

Brent found her at the gate one
day, claiming to be a refugee
from Myanmar . . . and we've
been stuck with her ever since !!
We will give you David's website as
soon as he has it up and running.
Update October 24th
It has been a couple of months now, and David Knapp's 4 canoes
with a kevlar bottom ... plus his new double kayak ... are now
ready to test out, load onto his trailer, and begin his paddling tours.

He has decided on a name for his touring adventures:
"
Hidden Rivers of Siam"

We wish him the best of luck !!
David expected to
encounter some pretty
nasty obstacles on the
rivers, so 200 gsm kevlar
fabric was laminated onto
the canoe bottoms
We designed and built special
"3rd seats" for David's canoes
The edges of the
kevlar were painted
over, then a Dupont
clearcoat was applied
David's son, Peter, is 6 foot 7
inches, and weights just about 290
pounds, so the kayak and canoe
settled into the water a bit ....  but
not so much.  We build our canoes
and kayaks strong, and their
design allows for heavy loading.
February Update:
We have just completed a very nice
pair  of kayaks ... a Guillemot and
a Misty
