About buying one of our
canoes or kayaks . . . .
All of our canoes built to date
have been our version of the
famous Prospector design, which
features a slightly stretched LOA
to 16 ft. 8 in. and more fully
rounded ends.  In keeping with
the idea that the Prospector is a
true workhorse, we have dubbed
our version the
Apaloosa.
Sanghalei Canoe & Kayak Company builds the Prospector in
agreement with Bear Mountain Boat Shop, which has the copyright
for the design.  We pay a modest royalty fee and are in constant
contact with Ted Moores and his partner, Joan Barrett, owners
and operators of Bear Mountain Boat Shop
The canoe to the left and above is one
of our latest.  It features a small deck
fore and aft, with a variety of exotic
wood choices ... the hull is bamboo with
some mai yang (a wood similar to
Philipping mahogany) and mai dang (a
very pretty, dense, red colored wood
used locally for making furniture. The
gunwales, seat frames, and thwarts are
mai takien (the most favored wood in
Thailand for boatbuilding ... stronger
and even more durable than teak).  The
decks are highlighted with mai taahn
(the black-with-white-speckles wood
from the trunk of the sugar palm).
Sorry, this canoe has been
sold to Marco Reinard of
Phuket, Thailand
This canoe is similar to the one above,
but with no fore and aft deck.

Sorry .... this canoe has been
sold to Dave Williams, director of
PaddleAsia Co. Ltd., in Phukhet,
Thailand.
When the boss wasn't looking, the boys
put together this canoe, featuring an
intricately inlaid image of two large fish,
placed fore and aft on both sides.
Although perhaps a little overwhelming
and even inappropriate, it is an
excellent example of my Mon workers
artistic ingenuity and craftsmanship.

Sorry .... this canoe has been
sold to Graham Wardle, Athletic
Director of The New International
School of Thailand, Bangkok
Our marketing strategy . . .

We at Sanghalei Canoe & Kayak have a very basic marketing strategy .... we
simply just don't have one
!!

Crazy ??  Naive ??  Maybe both !!  Or maybe it is because we want to sell directly
to the guy or gal out there that is actually going to put our craft in the water, and
we are not particularly thrilled about having the end price unnecessarily jacked up
by an overly profit-minded middle person.  In addition, we strongly feel that our
customer is not just someone who we sell our boats to, but is our new friend and
client, and when that person purchases one of our hand-crafted canoes or kayaks,
we have begun a long-term relationship.

We can ship individually to anywhere in the world and we can offer a price based
on you picking up your canoe or kayak at our shop, or in Bangkok, or f.o.b. directly
to your door, anywhere in the world.  We can arrange any necessary shipping and
handling, or you can arrange it yourself.

Of course, each purchase is unique, depending on the design and the situation of
the buyer.
Here are a few samples of our recent efforts
Once again ... when the boss
was away the boys showed
off with more artistic ingenuity
... this time they put a wave
design in the hull stripping,
accenting the design with the
black wood from the trunk of
the sugar palm.

Sorry . . . this canoe
has been sold.
We are currently setting up a distributorship with Mr.
Tim Morch in Canada, and have already shipped the
first canoe and kayak to him.

We have finally put together our

under royalty agreement with Nick
Schade of Guillemot Kayaks.  Brent

Tim Morch ordered this Prospector (our Apaloosa) for his good friend Carla, in Ontario.

The hull was formed from "mai yawn home", a very lightweight, darkly colored, and
intensely pretty wood, and "mai gra bawk" a maple-colored wood, also light and nicely
grained.  An inlay of a Salmon was featured on the starboard bow.
Mary, another of Tim's friends, chose to have us make a
Guillemot for her, with an inlay of her initials just aft of the cockpit.
Which we then crated
and shipped together
via Montreal.
Our very latest craft is this double,
especially built for David Knapp.

This is our own design, featuring a
concave shape in the hull for enhanced
speed and ease of paddling, and with
extra reserve buoyancy above the
waterline at the bow and stern to
enable this kayak to "ride up with the
waves" rather than "punching through
them".
This kayak also features our unique rudder system that is spring-loaded,
returning to neutral when pressure is relaxed on the pedals/foot-rests,
plus the rudder position can be locked in various positions for trim.
